Hi there! I'm Matthew Brown from Hamilton, Ontario. I am an Economist at Statistics Canada/Statistique Canada specializing in geospatial techniques with experience in research coordination, spatial data analysis, database management, and teaching GIS. I also have experience programming in different languages such as Python, R, and SQL. My favorite projects involve working with geospatial software (e.g., ArcGIS Desktop, or open source solutions - e.g., QGIS). My research work focuses on bringing spatial data into formerly non-spatial projects. My key areas of research interest are GPS data, transportation behaviour, older adult mobility, economic analysis, and bike share. I formerly worked as a member of the McMaster Monitoring My Mobility (MacM3) tech validation team. In this role, I helped develop/test an Android Wear OS smartwatch app, created a comprehensive data collection system using REDCap, developed the study website, and created research design/logistical processes for a large-scale study on older adult mobility.
I graduated from McMaster University with a MSc. in Geography after finishing my thesis, which is now published here: "A spatial modeling approach to estimating bike share traffic volume from GPS data". I also graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences from McMaster University in 2017.

Used in all of my GIS-based projects
Used for GIS tasks that can take advantage of newer features available in Pro
Used for statistical data analysis and making publication charts, plots, and figures
Used to automate geoprocessing tasks to increase workflow efficiency and automation of repetitive tasks
Used MySQL, PostgreSQL, and PostGIS to create spatial/non-spatial databases to support collaboration
